Designed in collaboration with SPAR UK and SPAR International, SPAR Scotland is excited to announce the first urban transient SPAR store in Europe, which is set to become a food-to-go hotspot for Glasgow students and shoppers.

The new 2,000sqft site will be located at SPAR Havannah Street, just five minutes from Glasgow city centre and close to student housing that is occupied all year round. It is also near Glasgow city council, other offices, and a large multi-storey car park, meaning its customers will be students, office workers and local residents.

With opening hours from 6am-10pm, the store features SPAR’s successful Daily Deli range, with a fresh menu of food-to-go as well as a self-serve chicken bar from lunchtime onwards, plus quick, hot breakfasts available for students to grab and ago.

There is also a substantial self-serve food-to-go offering for busy commuters, with a range of hot and cold products such as F’real Milkshakes, Skwishee, Costa Coffee and Dots Donuts.

A fantastic range of Scottish products and ranges, including Brownings the Bakers, Stuarts of Buckhaven, Malcolm Allan square sausage, Graham’s Dairies, Kerrs, Castleton Fruit Farm, Mrs Tilly’s and McGhee’s, are available. The store will also offer ethnic and international brands like PK Foods, plus Chinese and American lines, and an extensive vaping range.

The store’s beer, spirits and premium spirits range features Edinburgh Gins, West Brewery of Glasgow, and Williams Brothers beers, which are brewed just 400m from the store.

Jamie Buchanan, SPAR Scotland Formats & Merchandising Director, said: “We want this store to be famous for food-to-go, with its modern range of healthy, fresh, convenient and environmental products all within the SPAR brand.

“C J Lang & Son Ltd has worked closely with key Scottish suppliers and SPAR national suppliers to create a store that fits perfectly with the Scottish market, while also meeting the needs of overseas students.

“The great range of take-home convenient meals and ambient grocery are ideal for quick and easy meals for international students and busy office workers alike,” he said.

“To help keep service and payment quick and convenient, both served and self-serve tills are available, and with in-store seating, free Wi-Fi and mobile charge points, there’s plenty to keep shoppers in the store,” said Buchanan.

The store has been designed to be as efficient as possible, with LED lighting making a statement as shoppers walk through the doors.

Using their patented Micro Channel technology, Pastorfrigor GB provided the integral cabinets which are very energy efficient with low heat rejection and low noise. This also meant the store avoided having to run an expensive and disruptive external plant on the roof of the building. Run on the natural refrigerant R290, these cabinets sustainably align economic and environmental needs – an ideal solution for future of refrigeration in a retail space.

The store had a ribbon cutting ceremony and Fun Day on Friday 7th June.   A DJ was in store blasting out summer tunes, goody bags were handed out to 250 lucky customers and lots of product sampling was going on throughout the day.
