CJ Lang & Son Ltd, owners and operators of SPAR Scotland, raised more than £70,000 last year for local causes and charities.

The local SPAR store in Newport has donated a generous cheque for £1,500 to the Newport -On-Tay Traders Association. The cheque will help in running the Christmas Event taking place in Newport-on-Tay and being the major sponsor for the local schools Xmas lights competition.

The money was raised through the sale of single-use carrier bags, which costs customers 2p per bag, and was then collected and donated to a local charity nominated by the relevant stores. The initiative has been in place since 2008 and has already raised more than £300,000; the money is then reinvested directly into the surrounding community.

A representative of Newport-on-Tay Traders Association said “The Newport-on-Tay Traders Association once again would like to thank SPAR for their invaluable support in the community and being a major sponsor for our Xmas event on Saturday 29th November 2014. It is humbling to have a realisation that large organisations such as SPAR contribute so much to the local community, not just once, but giving each year. Many thanks.”

Newport-On-Tay Traders Association is just one of the 33 chosen charities across the country to benefit from the funds raised. Cheques will be donated to various campaigns from community groups, youth clubs, sports clubs, elderly care and specialist medical treatment throughout the year.
